Don't guess if your plant is ready for a drink or not-use a moisture meter to ensure the optimum health of your plants.
Know when to water your plants and how much of a drink to give them-
Easy to use- stick the probe 2-4 inches into the soil and after 10 minutes, note the moisture level.  
Remove and wipe clean after each use.
